So, something interesting is happening in Kenya: Effective from March 2024, Kenyans will now pay less for mobile calls due to the country’s economic conditions.
This is how it plays out in my head: the Kenyan communications authorities are like, “Guys, the economy is really insane right now. We might not be able to do much across boards to mitigate things, but this is a service you subscribe to and spend on almost every day. Let’s find a way to make life easier.”
My “country people” may not see this, so I won’t call them out👀
But as HR kings and queens, I think you can pick some inspiration from this💡

Building a “Speak Up” Culture
So, yesterday was International Men’s Day…
I won’t ask if you celebrated the good men in your life. I won’t even ask if you actually remembered it was International Men’s Day. No, I won’t mention it
…Anyways, the theme, Zero Male Suicide, got me asking: How do you get your male employees to open up about workplace challenges?
…Because bottled-up pressure and frustrations are the main culprits of depression.
I mean, it’s general knowledge, sadly, that only a few men speak out about mental health issues. A recent study from this article reveals that 40% of men have never spoken about their mental health with anyone, 29% say they’re “too embarrassed” to talk, and 20% feel there is a “negative stigma” around speaking out.
You know, it takes me back to a chat I had with a flatmate in the middle of the year when we battled the fuel hike crisis. He said: “My company’s Head of People asked me how I’m coping with the fuel crisis and economy, but I couldn’t tell her stuff. I mean, I didn’t have to look helpless and be pampered. I’m not the only one affected by the hike after all.”
Well, while the world is doubling down on combating suicide among men, one potent arsenal that helps is enabling a culture of speaking out and listening. And I guess this is where the HR superpower (and prerogative) comes in, right?
Yes, the male ego can still show up and lock a few tongues, but there are ways to get your male employees talking, and you really should build that culture.
However, I choose not to assume that you haven’t cracked that code. So tell me, how do you get your workers (male or female) to open up and talk to you?
