I know, I know, when you hear office politics, images of backstabbing colleagues, biased bosses and fake smiles come to mind.
But there’s more to office politics than just that. At least, that’s what I found.
Here’s what: Office politics is a necessary part of career success. It’s not just about kissing your boss’ ass or playing dirty games. It’s about building relationships with people at all levels of the organization and learning how to influence them to get your ideas heard. And let’s face it, that’s how business gets done!
And you don’t have to be a master manipulator or a smooth talker to win at office politics. In fact, the most successful people are often those who are authentic, great at what they do and can use their political instincts to figure out who really calls the shot in the office.
Yeah you might be thinking, “I’m not a politician. I don’t play those games.” But wait a minute. Have you ever talked a vendor into selling you a product at the last price? Then you are as much a politician as your favorite presidential candidate is.
So, put that talent to work in the office. Use your emotional intelligence and communication skills to build strategic connections with your colleagues and superiors if you want to climb the corporate ladder.
At the end of the day, office politics could just be another way of saying “people skills.”
Or what do you think? Let’s hear your story, what does office politics look like in your workplace?
